Shadows and Sun
South Paris had these conclusions about the hemispheres.
1. Similarities -
In both the Northern and the Southern hemispheres, the compass needle always points north.
In the Northern hemisphere, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. This is the same in the Southern Hemisphere.
We noticed that when objects are dropped from the same height, they fall at the same speed. Gravity is the same in the Northern and Southern hemisphere.
The only difference between toilet water spinning is in the brand of toilet, not in the hemispheres.
2. Differences -
We found out that moss grows on the south side of trees in the Southern Hemisphere and the north side of trees in the Northern Hemisphere. This is because the sun's rays come from the south up here, but from the north in the Southern Hemisphere.
A sundial has to face north up here but would need to face south in the Southern Hemisphere.
Seasons are different in both hemispheres. The earth tilts so that the sun's rays aim at different areas on the earth. This is why our seasons are opposite in each hemisphere.
Moturoa had these conclusions to add about the hemispheres.
1. There are some things the same about the north and south hemispheres
The sun always rises in the east and sets in the west.
A compass will always point to the North no matter where in the world you are.
Gravity is the same the whole world over.
A sundial would work the same way but the times would be different and it would need to face a different way.
2. These things are different in the north and south hemispheres
When we are having our day time people in New York are still asleep.
Our summer is on at the same time as a north hemisphere's winter- we loved seeing you all in the snow. We have long days while you have short days.
We learnt that wiki are great because you can both edit it from different places. We like to collaborate and learn together. Thank you for inviting us to join you in learning about our world.
