Welcome to Comparing Hemispheres!
Drawing by Alixandra Parisi
This wiki started as a question. During a simple discussion about where we live (the Northern Hemisphere) and a look at hemispheres on the map, students claimed they had heard that water in a whirlpool spins in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere.
This simple question led to more until we finally decided to find the answers. So we contacted a friend who lives in New Zealand. Not only is New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere, but it has almost the same latitude line as New York (where we live). This latitude line for us is approximately 43 degrees North. New Zealand is approximately 43 degrees South. So the distance from the equator should not affect our results.
Each page of this wiki states a question and demonstrates how the students in each class found the answers. The comparison and conclusion page is last.
